15 September 2009: European Ministries for Agriculture recently met to discuss the impacts of climate change on agriculture and the role of agriculture in curbing climate change, in preparation for Copenhagen.

The informal ministerial meeting convened from 13-15 September 2009, in Växjö, Sweden. Ministers discussed how the European Common Agricultural Policy can contribute to “responsible agriculture,” linking EU support to farmers to climate change adaptation, in particular water scarcity and the spread of disease. Besides favoring knowledge exchange and increased use of agricultural waste for bioenergy production, Ministers also considered reviewing EU legislation so as to include early detection and warning tools.
