28 April 2010: The European Commission has tabled a technology-neutral strategy on clean and energy-efficient vehicles, which aims to strengthen the European car industry while contributing to European leadership in climate change and clean transport.

The strategy contains an action plan and is based on a twin-track approach: improving the efficiency of conventional engines and making ultra low-carbon mobility a reality for European consumers. On global issues, the strategy points to starting international cooperation for standardization, regulatory dialogues, and technical assistance to non-EU countries, with a view to promoting trade and preventing market-distorting rules on green vehicles; supporting harmonized regulation through the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and global cooperation with non-UNECE countries; and support access to raw materials in short supply.
