5 June 2012: European Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik unveiled the European Resource Efficiency Platform (EREP), designed to facilitate achievement of the vision outlined in the European Commission’s Roadmap to a Resource-Efficient Europe, which aims to decouple resource use and economic growth. The EREP is organized around three elements: greening the economy; setting objectives and measuring progress; and framework conditions for investment in resource efficiency.

The Platform, which includes 34 members from the European Commission, European Parliament, the private sector, European Environment Ministries, international organizations, civil society and academia, is chaired by John Burton, former Prime Minister of Ireland. The EREP supports the shift towards sustainable growth via a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy. It is expected to provide initial recommendations in 12 months, with final outcomes in mid-2014.

The EREP includes an online component, the Online Resource Efficiency Platform (OREP), which will allow stakeholders to access information on resource efficiency, and share their views and perspectives on opportunities and challenges to achieve sustainable growth. The website includes links to the EREP, an interactive library, targets and indicators, as well as a section allowing users to “share what you do / what you know.” [OREP Website] [European Commission Press Release] [European Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik Speech]
