AU UNECA AFDB15 December 2014: Ethiopia will receive US$1.1 million from the Climate for Development in Africa (Clim-Dev Africa) Special Fund (CDSF) to strengthen its climate information and early warning systems for climate resilient adaptation and development, making it the first African country to benefit from the CDSF.

The African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) implement the CDSF, which is hosted by AfDB. CDSF, which became operational in October 2014, is a demand-led fund that finances climate-resilient development investment activities across Africa.

Fatima Denton, Coordinator of the UN Economic Commission for Africa’s (UNECA) African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), explained that the fund represents “a parallel track funding for countries in Africa who are keen to implement adaptation and mitigation projects and have been waiting anxiously for the ‘fast start’ finance of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to deliver on their implementation goals.”

CDSF will support Ethiopia in the second phase of its efforts to upgrade and expand climate monitoring and data rescue activities to strengthen the country’s climate and hydro-meteorological services. The Ethiopian project will also: enhance national capacities in climate monitoring, data analysis and forecasting; and facilitate the use of climate services in decision making.

The AfDB also highlights a Clim-Dev Africa Dinner Dialogue, which convened on the sidelines of the Lima Climate Change Conference. Participants at the Dinner Dialogue shared perspectives on enhancing the provision of climate information services to support Africa’s adaptation.
