ESCAP Commits to Improved Regional Energy Connectivity

Convening under the theme “Growing together: Economic integration for an inclusive and sustainable Asia-Pacific century," the 68th ESCAP session adopted a resolutions on promoting regional energy connectivity, through a more integrated regional power system.

24 May 2012: Asia-Pacific governments attending the 68th session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) called for inclusive and sustainable regional growth, with the aim of closing development gaps among and within Asia-Pacific countries, and setting economic progress on a greener pathway. In a series of resolutions, governments called for action to promote regional economic integration, trade and energy connectivity.

Convening under the theme “Growing together: Economic integration for an inclusive and sustainable Asia-Pacific century,” the session took place from 17-23 May 2012, at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. Participants reviewed challenges and uncertainties requiring regional cooperation. According to ESCAP, a key resolution was adopted on promoting regional energy connectivity, through a more integrated regional power system. Noeleen Heyzer, ESCAP Executive Secretary, underlined that this “Asian Energy Highway” aims to improve energy security and efficiency, as well as promote an increased share of renewables and clean energy in the regional energy mix.

Other resolutions adopted include a call to enhance regional economic integration, enable paperless trade, facilitate intraregional transport, and support inclusive and sustainable growth in least developed and geographically disadvantaged countries.
