26 April 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and World Bank highlighted a case study on financing water and sanitation in Seychelles, funded through debt financing by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), as well as grants from the European Development Fund and the African Water Facility (AWF).

The project aims to address water scarcity caused by seasonal rainfall variability, limited groundwater supplies and storage capacity, as well as underinvestment in water infrastructure. The project includes: restoring and extending existing water supply systems on three of the Seychelles islands; upgrading and creating sewage systems; implementing water demand and resource management programmes; and building capacity for operation of facilities.

The project’s objectives are to: improve water and energy efficiency; increase climate resilience; reduce ground water contamination risk; and implement disaster risk management.
