EEA19 September 2012: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report discussing the Streamlining European Biodiversity Indicators (SEBI) process to develop indicators to measure European biodiversity targets.

The report, “SEBI 2020: Building a Future on Lessons Learned from the SEBI 2010 Process,” highlights process success in bringing together existing data and developing processes for identifying policy relevant indicators, and also explores themes including the political context of SEBI. The report further describes: the processes and organization of SEBI 2010; lessons learned from SEBI; and the way forward.

It concludes that the strengths of SEBI have been in mobilizing data and expertize, developing a stakeholder process, linking SEBI to national, European and global processes, and streamlining indicator development and reporting. The report identifies that future SEBI efforts should be aligned with the structure of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) headline indicators and targets.
