28 January 2013: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released its “Annual Management Plan 2013,” which outlines the EEA work programme that will address a broad range of issues including: biodiversity; freshwater; marine environment; ecosystems; environment and health; sustainable consumption and production (SCP); land use; and agriculture and forests.

The Annual Management Plan includes sections on: EEA mission statement, vision and strategic objectives; key activities for 2013; EEA 2013 budget outline; EEA performance and strategic indicators; preliminary publication plan 2013; and annual work programme 2013. The Plan identifies the European Commission “Year of Air,” including publication of the third “Annual Air Quality Report” and follow up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) on the green economy and SCP as priorities for the EEA during 2013.

On water, the EEA will maintain data flows to the Water Data Centre, support the implementation of the recently released Water Blueprint, develop water scarcity and drought indicators and contribute the EU position on post-2015 goals on water supply and sanitation.

On SCP, the EEA plans to contribute to development of resource efficiency indicators, support implementation of the 10-year framework of programmes (10-YFP) on SCP agreed at Rio+20 and continue participation in the International Resource Panel work on green economy.

On biodiversity, the Plan outlines EEA’s intention to continue developing the Biodiversity Information System for Europe (BISE), implementing Natura 2000, including through data collection, aggregation and analysis, and integrating biodiversity into land, water, marine and agriculture policies.

On land use, the EEA will update the Land Use Data Centre and implement the integrated land assessment concept. On agriculture and forests, the Plan outlines upcoming EEA activities including supporting High Nature Value (HNV) farmland and HNV forest as bases for biodiversity policy developments.
