will open on 15 July 2008, and will be organized around the theme “Building
capabilities and capacities at all levels for timely humanitarian assistance,
including disaster risk reduction.”

During
its three-day session, the Council’s Humanitarian Affairs Segment will convene
two panel discussions on: disaster risk reduction and preparedness: addressing
the humanitarian consequences of natural disasters, including the impact of
climate change; and humanitarian challenges related to global food aid,
including enhancing international efforts and cooperation in this field. On 15
July in the morning, an informal event will be held on coordination in the
transition phase between emergency relief and sustainable recovery. In the
afternoon, an opening plenary will be held and delegates will hear general
statements. [ECOSOC Humanitarian
