hlpf18 March 2014: The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has reached consensus that the theme for the second meeting of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will be ‘Achieving the Millennium Development Goals and charting the way for an ambitious post-2015 development agenda, including the sustainable development goals.’ The HLPF will meet under the auspices of ECOSOC for the first time from 30 June-9 July 2014, including for a three-day ministerial segment from 7-9 July 2014.

Martin Sadjik, President of ECOSOC (Austria), said the agreement on the HLPF theme will allow the Forum to guide the elaboration of the post-2015 development agenda. Sadjik said, “I am confident that this decision will facilitate consensual agreement on a single Ministerial Declaration to be adopted by the High-level Political Forum” and the Council.

Some Member States expressed their wishes that the act of ECOSOC members deciding the HLPF theme should not create a precedent, and that the Forum itself should decide its themes for future sessions. [UN Press Release] [HLPF Website]
