18 February 2010: The Regional Coordination Mechanism for Latin America and the Caribbean of the UN system met in Mexico City, Mexico, to discuss the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), climate change, the political situation in the region, and the UN’s contribution to regional cooperation.

The meeting was inaugurated by Asha-Rose Migiro, UN Deputy Secretary-General, and Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The second session reviewed the climate change negotiations process and perspectives on the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC. Regarding the MDGs in Latin America and the Caribbean, representatives from several UN organizations and agencies highlighted coordination efforts made to date and announced that an interagency report about the region’s progress towards the fulfillment of the MDGs will be launched in July 2010.
