The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) organized a policy dialogue on "Institutional Development and Innovation in Biofuels in Latin America and the Caribbean."
29 March 2011: The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) organized a policy dialogue on “Institutional Development and Innovation in Biofuels in Latin America and the Caribbean,” where three papers were presented on the future of biofuels in the region.
A paper on the “Economics of biofuels and key issues for Latin America” indicated that Brazil and Argentina are the world’s second largest producers of bioethanol and biodiesel, respectively. Another study presented a “Comparative analysis of patents in the biofuels production chain in Latin America and the rest of the world,” which demonstrated that, with the exception of Brazil, the region has a very low level of participation in patents related to the biofuel productive chain. The third paper identified efforts in the region to develop policies and capacities for research, development and innovation for the development of biofuels. All papers are in Spanish.
