The Dominican Republic has launched a national strategy, developed with support from UN CC:Learn, to create by 2030 all necessary education, training and other capacity building programmes to help the Dominican Republic cope with its climate change adaptation and mitigation challenges.
The strategy aims to integrate climate change issues into the education and training programmes for the agriculture, energy, forestry, tourism and water sectors.
7 August 2012: The Dominican Republic has formally launched its National Strategy to Strengthen Human Resources and Skills to Advance Green, Low Emissions and Climate Resilient Development, which was developed with assistance from the One UN Training Service Platform on Climate Change (UN CC:Learn).
The Strategy was launched on 7 August 2012, by Vice President Rafael Alburquerque in a ceremony held at the National Palace in the capital, Santo Domingo.
The Strategy, developed by the Dominican Republic’s National Council for Climate Change and the Clean Development Mechanism (NCCCCDM), aims at systematically integrating climate change learning in key sectors and strengthening capacities of national education and training institutions relevant for green, low emission and climate resilient development. The objective is to ensure that by 2030 the Dominican Republic has an education system and implements policies promoting human and institutional capacities to adequately cope with the country’s challenges related to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The development of the Strategy included a full review of existing Dominican climate change priorities, policies and initiatives and assessment of the current capacities of the Dominican education and training systems. Among other things, the Strategy calls for integrating climate change issues into the education and training of teachers, the development and dissemination of teaching materials on the subject, and integrating climate change education into the learning and training strategies of the Dominican Republic’s agriculture, energy, forestry, tourism and water sectors.
UN CC:Learn is a collaborative initiative involving 32 UN agencies that supports member States, UN agencies and other development partners in designing and implementing country-driven, results-oriented and sustainable learning to address climate change.
