diversitas-internationalJuly 2014: DIVERSITAS has circulated the documents produced in the context of a project on access and benefit-sharing (ABS) policies and regulations and its implications for academic research in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), including key messages, findings and case studies of national ABS implementation and academic research.

Run by DIVERSITAS, the International Council for Science (ICSU) and its Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, the International Unions of Biological Sciences and the Swiss Academy of Sciences, the project brought together researchers and policy-makers from the region to engage in a dialogue on challenges and opportunities regarding facilitated access to biological material, and the needs of academia and government agencies. Participants elaborated joint recommendations to support the implementation of national and/or regional ABS regulations that suit the needs of users and providers of biological material with a view to better conserve and sustainably use biodiversity, while allowing the generation of biodiversity-related knowledge for the benefit of society.

The outcome documents include: a 2-pager on key messages; a document compiling all project findings; and annexes on national implementation in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, and case studies on ABS and academic research in several LAC countries. [Project Documents]
