20 February 2013: A two-day consultation on disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the post-2015 agenda discussed implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in a disaster-conflict context, and issued recommendations on integrating DRR and resilience into the post-2015 agenda. The meeting was hosted by the Government of Indonesia on 19-20 February 2013, in Jakarta, Indonesia.

This event was one in a series leading to the high-level meeting of the global thematic consultation on “Conflict, Violence and Disaster and the Post-2015 Development Agenda,” which will convene in Helsinki, Finland, on 13 March 2013. Other meetings in the series have focused on: conflict and fragility, in Liberia, in November 2012; and citizen security, armed violence, and impacts on development, in Panama, in February 2013. A synthesis report from the meeting series will be submitted to the high-level meeting in Helsinki.

Government officials, academics, and representatives of international NGOs and the private sector attended the Jakarta event on DRR. In his keynote address, Susilo Bambang Yudhyono, President of Indonesia, highlighted the need to safeguard MDG achievements from setbacks caused by natural disasters. Participants discussed countries’ experiences of implementing the MDGs in disaster-conflict contexts.

The UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are co-leaders of global thematic consultations on “Conflict, Violence and Disaster” in the post-2015 development agenda. The consultations are supported by the Government of Finland.
