8 March 2013: In preparation for the UN High-Level Meeting on Disability and Development on 23 September 2013, an online consultation on disability has opened on The World We Want 2015 platform. The e-consultation is taking place as part of the global thematic consultation on inequalities in the post-2015 development agenda.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are organizing the online discussion, which runs from 8-28 March 2013.

The consultation focuses on identifying: challenges to implementing disability programmes and policies; approaches that have been successful in the past; recommendations for action; and stakeholder roles. Participants also can comment on these areas via a questionnaire emailed back to the organizers. The current discussion builds on online discussions on disability in November 2012, a summary of which is now available, and aims to consider particular challenges and responsive actions in greater detail. According to the summary document, earlier discussions recommended that the post-2015 development framework incorporate a stand-alone equality goal, mainstream equality and non-discrimination of persons with disabilities, and produce disaggregated data to ensure visibility of persons with disabilities, among other points.

The online consultation contributes towards the eventual outcome document from the high-level disability meeting in September, mandated in UN General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 66/124. The outcome document will support the aims of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other internationally agreed goals for persons with disabilities.
