UN DESAFebruary 2012: The latest issue of “DESA News,” the newsletter from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, highlights the 2012 priorities for the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), in the vision of its incoming President, Miloš Koterec. Koterec outlined how the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) can have “the right impact,” and how ECOSOC should position itself to best influence the post-2015 development framework.

The newsletter also notes: the opening of the civil society accreditation and registration process for the UNCSD; the focus on poverty eradication during the 50th session of the Commission on Social Development (CSocD), which takes place from 1-10 February 2012; and DESA’s planned training for Major Groups attending the 12th Governing Session of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

According to DESA News, the training workshop is part of a series to enhance awareness of the themes of sustainable development and build stakeholder capacity to engage with the intergovernmental process, providing the most current information relevant to the Rio+20 process. Further capacity building sessions are planned for New York in March and April alongside negotiations on the UNCSD Outcome Document, inter alia.
