DESA Launches Platform for Sustainable Development Modelling

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) launched an online platform to assist countries in designing policies and strategies related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The platform seeks to: introduce practitioners to modelling tools; provide an interactive platform for policy analysts; and make available data and model codes to promote further research and policy dialogue.

modelling_tools18 February 2016: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) launched an online platform to assist countries in designing policies and strategies related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The platform seeks to: introduce practitioners to modelling tools; provide an interactive platform for policy analysts; and make available data and model codes to promote further research and policy dialogue.

Launched during a workshop on 18 February 2016, at UN Headquarters in New York, US, the platform on ‘Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development Policies’ includes sections on Economy, Social and Environment. It features models on: fuel tax and development; universal access to electricity; integrated systems analysis of energy (Atlantis); growth and social inclusion; estimating electricity consumption from household surveys; and climate, land, energy and water systems.

The project was developed by DESA, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (Brazil) and KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), and is powered by the UN Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT).
