UNCTAD, ECLAC and DESA Hold Briefing on Trade Dimension of Rio+20
story highlights

Presenters at a briefing given by UNCTAD, DESA, and ECLAC discussed potential “enrichments” to the zero draft, based on submissions from States and others, such as: the International Agreement on green policy space submitted by Pakistan, the Sustainable Energy Trade Agreement submitted by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and Switzerland's proposal on Process and Production Methods.

25 January 2012: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) held a special event to brief participants on the recent workshop on “the trade dimension of Rio+20.”

The briefing took place on 25 January 2012, at UN Headquarters, in New York, US, alongside the initial discussions on the zero draft of the Outcome Document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). Presenters summarized the 19 January workshop and announced a follow-up workshop to be held in March.
According to the presenters, the trade-related submissions to the November 2011 Compilation Document, which formed the basis for the zero draft, fell into three categories: minimizing potential risks associated with building green economies; maximizing trade opportunities, particularly in developing countries; and improving governance of global trade.

They also discussed potential “enrichments” to the zero draft, based on submissions from States and others, such as: the International Agreement on green policy space submitted by Pakistan, the Sustainable Energy Trade Agreement submitted by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and Switzerland’s proposal on Process and Production Methods.
