story highlights

The permanent representatives of Timor-Leste and the Czech Republic will lead intergovernmental consultations seeking to enhance synergies and coherence and reduce overlap between the agendas of the UNGA, ECOSOC and their subdidiary bodies, the HLPF and other related forums "in light of the 2030 Agenda".

The need to enhance synergies and coherence, and reduce overlaps was called for by UNGA resolution 71/323 on ‘Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly’ of September 2017.

20 November 2018: UN General Assembly (UNGA) President María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés announced that the permanent representatives of Timor-Leste and Czech Republic will facilitate intergovernmental consultations on the alignment of the agendas of the UNGA, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and their subdidiary bodies, the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and other related fora “in light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

In a letter issued on 20 November 2018, Espinosa notes that following consultations with UN Member States, she appointed Maria Helena Lopes de Jesus Pires, Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste, and Marie Chatardová, Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic, to lead the consultations.

The need for the process was noted in the UNGA’s September 2017 resolution on ‘Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly’ (A/RES/71/323). Discussions on alignment have been ongoing since 2016, and among other outcomes have led to the preparation of a “mapping assessment” for reducing overlap and enhancing the agendas’ synergy and coherence (UNGA 70), and a report containing recommendations on enhancing synergies and coherence and reducing overlap (UNGA 71).

During UNGA 72, co-facilitators Inga Rhonda King, Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Marc Pecsteen de Buytswerve, Permanent Representative of Belgium, recommended that the UNGA 73 President continue the consultation process.
