6 July 2011: Cuba has hosted the launch of the UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020 in the Caribbean countries. The event took place on the occasion of the Eighth International Convention on Environment and Development, and coincided with the celebration of the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification in the region.
The Eighth International Convention on Environment and Development is meeting from 4-8 July 2011, in Havana, Cuba, with the participation of 950 delegates representing 35 countries.
In December 2010, the UN General Assembly declared 2011-2020 the UN Decade on Biodiversity. The aim of the Decade is to support and promote implementation of the objectives of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and its Aichi Biodiversity Targets and mainstream biodiversity at different levels. Celebrations have been launched in the Republic of Korea, India and the Philippines, while more regional launches are planned in the coming months.
In 2007, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/62/195, declared 2010 to 2020 the UN Decade for Deserts and the Fight Against Desertification (UNDDD). [CBD Communiqué] [UNDDD website]
