ctcn2 June 2014: The UN’s Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN) has received eight requests for technology assistance from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Chile, Colombia, Honduras and Pakistan. Countries requested CTCN support for climate actions related to: renewable energy policies; public transportation; biodiversity monitoring; and coastal protection through saving mangrove forests.

Achim Steiner, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director, said the CTCN is working “to accelerate the use of new technologies in improving the lives and livelihoods of people in developing countries who are dealing with the impacts of climate change on a daily basis.” Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, remarked that the CTCN provides “yet another foundation upon which optimism and action is being built” ahead of a climate agreement at the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC in Paris, France, in 2015. She added that requests for support need to be matched with the finance required, most notably through “swift and sufficient capitalization of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).”

Since the CTCN’s launch in 2013, more than 80 countries have established national CTCN focal points that work with country stakeholders to develop and convey requests. The CTCN promotes the accelerated transfer of environmentally sound technologies for mitigation and adaptation in developing countries, with the aim of accelerating climate technology implementation. CTCN offers potential solutions as well as tailored capacity building in order to transfer knowledge and advice from one country to another. The CTCN, which is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the operational arm of the UNFCCC’s Technology Mechanism and is hosted by UNEP in collaboration with the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and 11 independent regional organizations with expertise in climate technologies.
