ITTO FAO6 November 2013: The International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) has announced the accession of the sixty-seventh Party, Costa Rica, to the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 (ITTA, 2006).

In order to support the implementation of ITTA, 2006, the ITTO, the Government of Costa Rica, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will host an international workshop on payments for ecosystem services (PES). The meeting, according to ITTO, will build on Costa Rica’s reputation as a leader in PES in tropical forests.

According to FAO statistics, Costa Rica’s forests account for 51 percent of its land area, a percentage that has increased since 2000 due to reforestation efforts, natural regeneration and the establishment of plantations, in part to supply teak logs for export. [ITTO Press Release]
