The second annual Women4Climate conference took place in Mexico City, Mexico, on 26 February 2018, with the aim of advancing a shared global agenda spanning education, innovation and economic equality. Launched by C40 in 2016, the Women4Climate initiative works to raise awareness about the disproportionate impact climate change has on women around the world.

Featuring opening remarks from Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, the conference convened men and women from all over the world in a day of discussions, including on: the role of women in delivering on the Paris Agreement on climate change and the importance of empowering the next generation of climate leaders; how women leaders build inclusive societies by linking environmental and social benefits with economic development; sustainable global food systems; how the shocks and stresses of natural disasters and extreme weather events demand resilient communities and infrastructure; and solving climate change through business and entrepreneurship.

The event also honored the 10 young women climate leaders that have been selected to be part of Mexico City’s Women4Climate Mentorship Programme, which matches mayors, committed leaders from the business sector, international organizations and civil society with the “unstoppable women leaders of tomorrow,” guiding them to develop and implement actions inspired by the “think local, act global” philosophy. The selected 10 winners, who had each submitted a project proposal within the framework of Mexico City’s Climate Action Programme, will receive technical support to bring their proposals to life and will be connected with mentors who will share their knowledge and experience to guide them to become powerful future leaders in their respective fields.
