Conference Addresses Solid Waste Management Technology in Asia-Pacific

The Ninth International Conference on Solid Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 9) met under the theme 'Towards Closed Loop of Waste Management' and addressed: e-waste policy; national-level policy regarding fluorescent lamp collection and treatment; hazardous waste management; opportunities and challenges for contaminated sites management and remediation; solid waste disposal technology and industry development; promotion of technical assistance and technology transfer in Asia and the Pacific; Basel Convention implementation in Asia and the Pacific; and the management and treatment technologies of solid waste, such as hazardous waste, e-waste, biomass, industrial waste and contaminated sites.

Basel-Rotterdam-StockholmNovember 2014: The Ninth International Conference on Solid Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 9) met under the theme ‘Towards Closed Loop of Waste Management,’ and addressed: e-waste policy; national-level policy regarding fluorescent lamp collection and treatment; hazardous waste management; opportunities and challenges for contaminated sites management and remediation; solid waste disposal technology and industry development; promotion of technical assistance and technology transfer in Asia and the Pacific; Basel Convention implementation in Asia and the Pacific; and the management and treatment technologies of solid waste, such as hazardous waste, e-waste, biomass, industrial waste and contaminated sites.

ICWMT 9 convened in Beijing, China, from 29-31 October 2014, with opening remarks from Kerstin Stendahl, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm Convention (BRS) Secretariat.

The conference was hosted by, inter alia, the Ministry of Education of China, Tsinghua University, China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre (SCRC) for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific. It was organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC Beijing), Basel Convention Regional Centre (BCRC) for Asia and the Pacific, the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences and the International Waste Working Group, among other partners.
