hlpf20 June 2016: The UN Secretariat has provided short concept notes for each session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2016, including both the five-day general segment and the three-day Ministerial Segment.

The general segment (11-15 July 2016) will include a session titled “Where do we stand at year one?” to assess progress and outline challenges related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The general segment also will include sessions on the theme of the 2016 HLPF, ‘Ensuring that no one is left behind,’ to address: envisioning an inclusive world in 2030; lifting people out of poverty and addressing basic needs; fostering economic growth, prosperity, and sustainability; the nexus of food security and sustainable agriculture, climate action, sustainable oceans and terrestrial ecosystems; and creating peaceful and more inclusive societies and empowering women and girls.

In addition, the general segment will discuss: science-policy interface; creating ownership at the national level; mainstreaming Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into national policies, plans and strategies and integrating the three dimensions of sustainable development; vertical cooperation between local authorities and national governments; challenges in mobilizing means of implementation at the national level; national mechanisms for monitoring progress and reporting on SDG implementation; making the 2030 Agenda deliver for small island developing States (SIDS); countries in special situations; multi-stakeholder engagement for implementation; and regional experiences.

The HLPF Ministerial Segment (18-20 July 2016) will discuss ‘Ensuring that No One is Left Behind’ with a focus on: reaching the most vulnerable; challenges of countries in special situations; and unlocking means of implementation for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and creating an enabling environment. It will also include the presentation of 22 countries’ voluntary national reviews (VNRs), and a session on ‘Prospects for the future’ highlighting studies on how the world in 2030 will differ from today, and what it will take to achieve the SDGs.

The HLPF will take place from 11-20 July 2016, at UN Headquarters in New York, US. In preparation for the Forum, inputs from governments, intergovernmental bodies and forums, Major Groups and other stakeholders and partnerships and voluntary commitments are being posted on the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ (DESA) online platform.
