22 February 2013: The co-facilitators of the preparatory process of the Special Event to follow up efforts made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which will be convened at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2013, have released a letter to Member States including a draft decision on modalities of the Special Event, and a proposed organization of the event’s format.

The co-facilitators, Kingsley Mamabolo, South Africa, and Anne Anderson, Ireland, will hold a second round of informal consultations on the event on 28 February 2013, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.

The draft resolution proposes to hold the one-day event on 25 September 2013, and for it to feature an opening and closing plenary, as well as four high-level interactive multi-stakeholder roundtable sessions. The proposed theme of all roundtable discussions is “addressing both the challenge of MDG achievement and looking to the Post-2015 Framework.” The draft also suggests that the Special Event should produce a short, concise, forward-looking outcome document.

In their letter to Member States, the co-facilitators stress the urgency of making an early decision on these event modalities and look towards finding general consensus on a draft resolution.
