CMS Convenes CSAB Meeting to Discuss Science Conservation Linkages

The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) has concluded a series of meetings in Formia, Italy, held 7-12 October 2013, to discuss collaboration among related conventions and to address the linkages between science and migratory species conservation.

CMS25 October 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) has concluded a series of meetings that discussed collaboration among related conventions and addressed the linkages between science and migratory species conservation.

Primary to these meetings, which convened in Formia, Italy, from 7-12 October 2013, was the sixth meeting of the Chairs of the Scientific Advisory Bodies of the Biodiversity-related Conventions (CSAB). At this annual meeting, representatives of the scientific advisory bodies of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), CMS, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and the World Heritage Convention discussed how to improve synergies and cooperation as well as the need for implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Also addressed were activities in regard to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). The next meeting of CSAB is expected to take place in summer 2014.

In addition, the Strategic and Planning Meeting of the CMS Scientific Council took place between 9-11 October. At this event, participants discussed issues such as the Future Shape Process as well as gaps in the Convention. The next ordinary meeting of the Scientific Council (the 18th) will take place in mid-2014.

Also part of the meeting series, an ad Hoc Meeting on the Harmonization of Bird Taxonomy and a Scientific Symposium on the Economic Value of Migratory Species were convened. [CMS News]
