CMS1 December 2015: Experts from 20 countries gathered at the Second Meeting of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) African-Eurasian Migratory Landbirds Working Group to discuss issues related to migratory landbirds conservation relevant for the UN Development Action Framework (UNDAF) cycle, currently under preparation for countries in West Africa.

Participants addressed implementation of the Landbirds Action Plan (AEMLAP), which has a special focus on West Africa; as well as a draft programme of work for the Working Group, which includes a regional approach according to three main flyway areas: the East Atlantic Flyway comprising West Europe and West Africa; the East Russia /South Asia flyway and the Middle East/East Africa/Rift Valley flyway. Participants also agreed that they would prioritize the East Atlantic Flyway where significant declines of migratory landbirds have been detected.

The meeting of the CMS African-Eurasian Migratory Landbirds Working Group was held from 25 – 27 November 2015, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. It was hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Sub-Regional Office for West Africa, with support from Switzerland. [CMS Press Release, 1 December] [CMS Press Release, 19 November]
