23 April 2010: The sportswear company PUMA, a member of the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Climate Neutral Network, has announced plans to offset the carbon dioxide emissions of PUMA-sponsored national football teams taking part in the Football World Cup this summer in South Africa. This includes teams from Algeria, Cameroon, Côte D’Ivoire, Ghana, Italy, Switzerland and Uruguay, and represents emissions from a total of 336 players and officials.
PUMA will compensate the company’s direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions through offsetting projects in Africa that also take into account the needs of local communities, the conservation of biodiversity and corporate social responsibility programmes. The portfolio of offsetting projects in Africa will be verified by an internationally recognized auditing company according to internationally accepted standards. [UNEP Press Release]
