Civil Society Consultation Underway for Global Sustainability Panel
story highlights

The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service has circulated a menu of topics for civil society members' input into the UN Secretary-General's High-level Panel on Global Sustainability.

The input received will be forwarded to the Panel ahead of the next meeting of its deputies, in April.

9 March 2011: At the request of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Global Sustainability (GSP), the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) launched a civil society consultation to share information about the work of the GSP and gather inputs for consideration by the GSP Panelists, their deputies, and the GSP Secretariat.

UN-NGLS circulated a menu of questions as potential topics for civil society members’ input. The questions are based on the GSP’s Terms of Reference and reports from the Panel’s and Sherpas’ (panelists’ deputies) meetings so far, and cover four areas: assessing progress towards global sustainability; foundations for a new vision of sustainability; better and more coherent policies and institutional mechanisms; and measures of progress beyond GDP.

UN-NGLS will accept submissions until 28 March 2011. It will forward a synthesis report to the GSP for consideration prior to the next meeting of the Sherpas, in April. The GSP expects to issue its final report to the Secretary-General in late November 2011. Its inputs will feed into inter-governmental processes, including the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and meetings of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
