CITES Reports on Checklist, Bangladesh Training

The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and partners held a one day workshop on CITES and a two-day training on wildlife law enforcement in Bangladesh, the 5-7 October 2015.

The workshop reinforced the need for cooperation to combat wildlife crime, while the training built local capacity to respond to wildlife and forest crime.

CITES12 October 2015: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and partners held a one-day workshop on CITES and a two-day training on wildlife law enforcement in Bangladesh, from 5-7 October 2015. The workshop reinforced the need for cooperation to combat wildlife crime, while the training built local capacity to respond to wildlife and forest crime.

The workshop convened representatives from the Bangladesh Forest Department and different law enforcement agencies of the country. The training, led by the CITES Secretariat, INTERPOL and the World Customs Organization (WCO) and based on the findings of the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime (ICCWC) Wildlife and Forest Crime Analytic Toolkit in the country, was given to 32 officers from the Forest Department.

Dr. Tapan Kumar Dey, Conservator of Forests, Bangladesh Forest Department said that, “The additional knowledge will empower wildlife law enforcement officers in the country.”

In related news, CITES has highlighted the availability of new features, developed with the UN Environment Programme – World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC), to support integration of the CITES Checklist and Species+ with national information systems and to reduce duplication and errors.

John E.
