story highlights

The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration between the two organizations.

SPREP - CITES14 November 2014: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen collaboration between the two organizations.

The agreement, signed at the margins of the World Parks Congress in Sydney, Australia, aims to encourage other Pacific island countries to join CITES and to build synergies between CITES and other biodiversity-related multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) in the region, in particular, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

David Sheppard, Director General, SPREP, noted that only six Pacific island countries are parties to CITES. John Scanlon, CITES Secretary General, referred to SPREP as a strong regional partner, and one that is instrumental in building countries’ capacity to meet obligations under CITES.
