ipni-cimmyt20 February 2014: A decision-support fertilizer toolkit developed by the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) has won the best innovation prize within the Information and Communications Technology Solutions Category at the Bihar Innovation Forum II.

Given that most smallholders do not have access to soil testing facilities, the ‘Nutrient Expert® for South Asia’ tool helps farmers identify fertilizer options. It is being used by the Climate-Smart Villages project of the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) program to increase nutrient use efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The Climate-Smart Villages model integrates climate information services and technologies into existing village development plans. It seeks to bring researchers, local partners and farmers together to collaborate, evaluate and maximize synergies in climate-smart agriculture interventions in West Africa, East Africa and South Asia. A variety of interventions are used in climate-smart villages related to weather, water, carbon, nitrogen, energy and knowledge sharing. CCAFS and CIMMYT are members of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
