The May issue of the CIFOR News Update provides a briefing on the B4E-Business for Environment luncheon on REDD+ held in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a workshop for Indonesian journalists on the importance of wetlands for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
31 May 2011: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released the May issue of its News Update, which includes information on recent workshops on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).
The update provides a briefing on the luncheon organized by CIFOR during the B4E- Business for Environment meeting held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in May 2011, focusing on REDD+. Frances Seymour, CIFOR Director General, presented the case that businesses can meet both REDD+ and their own business objectives. The discussions highlighted the challenges for both Norway and Indonesia of working together on their REDD+ agreement from May 2010. At the luncheon, the Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia stressed that a sustainable business model that incorporates REDD+ will provide new opportunities, and improved forestry governance, policies and practices.
The newsletter includes a video on a May workshop during which Indonesian journalists visited mangroves in Bali, to raise their awareness of REDD+ and highlight the importance of wetlands for climate change mitigation and adaptation. The news update also highlights the release of CIFOR’s 2010 Annual Report. CIFOR is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
