CIFOR29 July 2013: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) released the third book in a series on REDD+. The book, titled ‘Analyzing REDD+: Challenges and Choices,’ examines the result of early REDD+ activities based on the Global Comparative Study on REDD+ undertaken by CIFOR and partners.

The book features articles aimed to build an understanding of REDD+ and its evolution. It also includes information on implementing REDD+, such as financing REDD+, land tenure issues, REDD+ benefit sharing and local concerns around REDD+. Other articles address measuring REDD+ performance, such as baselines and monitoring, REDD+ safeguards, and applying emission factors.

The book identifies a number of lessons learned from REDD+, including the importance of addressing jurisdictional challenges with regards to national and local level decision making, and coordination with regards to land tenure, benefit sharing, and monitoring. With regards to next steps, the book calls for REDD+ objectives to be clarified. It also suggests that priority should be given to no-regrets policies that can reduce deforestation and forest degradation, and that capacity should continue to be built for REDD+ regardless regardless of climate objectives.
