CIFOR Newsletter Highlights Achievements in Brazil, Indonesia, Mozambique and Uganda

The CIFOR newsletter includes an update on scientific information related to the conservation of forest species, as well as gender mainstreaming in forest management.

It also invites participation in events to be held at Forest Day in Doha, Qatar, during UNFCCC COP 18, as well as events associated with the 20th anniversary of CIFOR, which will be celebrated in 2013.

September 2012: The Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has released the August edition of its News Update, inviting participation in its 20th anniversary celebrations, which will be held in 2013. The celebrations will describe CIFOR’s journey from a small organization established in 1993, to its current state as a highly influential organization with over 200 partners.

The newsletter announces an extension of the application period for the Issues Marketplace and exhibits to be held during Forest Day, which will be convened by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) on 2 December 2012, in Doha, Qatar, on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The newsletter, in its science dispatch, explores positive developments in efforts to save Indonesia’s Rhinoceros. In doing so, the dispatch acknowledges the declaration, by the President of Indonesia, of 2012 as the Year of the Rhino.

Further, the newsletter discusses issues related to: deforestation and the amended Forest Code in Brazil; agricultural management and the conversation of the Moluccan cockatoo in Indonesia; and policy, legal and institutional frameworks for gender considerations in forestry management in Uganda.

With regards to reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+), the newsletter highlights the drafting of the REDD+ strategy in Mozambique and discusses the potential contribution of REDD+ to forest product management in the Amazon.

Finally, the newsletter introduces the “weADAPT” partnership, which includes updates, projects, and articles related to issues linking forests and trees to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
