11 January 2013: The Climate Investment Funds (CIF) have reported on the implementation of Mozambique’s US$100 million strategic programme for climate resilience, which was endorsed in June 2011 by the CIF through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) window.

The Government of Mozambique, together with the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), is developing climate-resilient projects envisioning policy and institutional change in several sectors, such as agriculture, coastal cities, transport, water management, forestry and learning.

According to CIF, seven pilot projects are planned with special emphasis on: the drought-prone Limpopo watershed; the flood-prone Zambezi watersheds; and the coastal city of Beira, which is vulnerable to rising sea levels, storms and erosion.

CIF further reports that in order to include citizens’ concerns in the projects, consultations with civil society groups, development partners, and government entities are being held in the country. CIF highlights that Mozambique is currently developing a national monitoring and evaluation framework set to be launched in 2013, which will enable reporting to the CIF from 2014, and to Mozambique’s Council of Ministers from 2015.
