The Summary by Asha-Rose Migiro, UN Deputy Secretary-General and Chair of the Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) identifies 15 critical steps for addressing DRR.
At the meeting, participants called for greater action to reduce disaster risk by involving local governments, building on the role of women and involving children and youth, and engaging the private sector to build a resilient framework for sustainable development.
3 June 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released the Chair’s Summary of the Third Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and World Reconstruction Conference, in which Asha-Rose Migiro, UN Deputy Secretary-General and Chair of the Third Session, highlights that DRR should be at the forefront of efforts to preserve and protect the balance of nature, and ensure sustainable development and well being for future generations.
According to the Summary of the Third Session, which took place from 13-23 May 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland, participants called for greater action to reduce disaster risk by involving local governments, building on the role of women and involving children and youth, and engaging the private sector to build a resilient framework for sustainable development. The Summary identifies 15 steps, including: developing standards and indicators for measuring the effectiveness of DRR; increasing funding and public awareness; avoiding the inefficient use of existing resources by ensuring technologies for risk reduction are accessible as a means for adaptation and promoting integrated approaches to development that address climate change adaptation, DRR and ecosystem management and restoration; and ensuring the availability of tailored, science-based, climate-related information through the Global Framework for Climate Services.
Migiro notes in the Summary that leadership and coordinated support from the international community are critical to success, highlighting the contribution of the World Reconstruction Conference, held during the Third Session of the Global Platform.
The Summary will be followed up and reported on in the Fourth Session of the Global Platform. The Proceedings of the Third Session will be available in late June and reflect the discussions and outcomes from the main sessions in greater detail.
