CGIAR Researchers Identify Hotspots of Climate Change and Food Insecurity
story highlights

The Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) held a seminar on mapping hotspots of climate change and food insecurity across the global tropics and identified eight hotspots for climate change and food insecurity.

March 2011: The Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) Programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) held a seminar on mapping hotspots of climate change and food insecurity across the global tropics, on 15 March 2011 at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The CCAFS Programme has asked a team of scientists to carry out rapid assessments of locations in the tropics where climate change impacts are expected to become severe by 2050 and where people are likely to become increasingly food insecure. The approach centers on vulnerability as a combination of exposure to a hazard, the sensitivity of the system to the hazard and the system’s coping capacity. At the seminar, eight hotspots were identified and the justifications for their selection was outlined. A final report of the full research will be released in May. ILRI is a member of the CGIAR.
