CGIAR26 November 2013: In a commitment to making information products, including spatial, crop, socio-economic and genomic datasets, open access over the next five years, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has put into place its Open Access and Data Management Policy.

As part of the effort to harmonize this process across the 15 CGIAR Centers, CGIAR members and participants from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) met during the week of 25 November 2013 in a Data Standards Summit to develop a roadmap on data management, standards and vocabulary across data types.

The Open Access Policy aims to improve the efficiency and impact of research and allow the global community to access the depth of CGIAR data. The policy expands data availability beyond simply ensuring that research papers are linked back to the underlying data, and instead seeks to link potential users to a deeper well of CGIAR data. The policy builds on previous CGIAR efforts through the Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development (CIARD) initiatives. It also builds on the success of existing open access platforms developed through CGIAR centers including the Open Access Cassava Database, RTBMaps, the International Food Policy Research Institute’s Food Security Portal, the Integrated Breeding Workflow System, and the Iraq Salinity Platform.
