Central Asian Forum Calls for Increasing Access to Sustainable Energy

A resolution agreed upon at the third International Energy Efficiency Forum in Central Asia has called for increasing cooperation on sustainable energy, discussing energy efficiency in the house sector, regulatory environments for clean energy, and financing energy efficiency.

UNECE14 September 2012: A resolution adopted at the third International Energy Efficiency Forum on “Energy for Sustainable Development,” which convened from 12-14 September 2012, in Issykkul Lake, Kyrgyzstan, emphasized that sustainable energy use, energy efficiency and improved access to clean energy are essential to energy security. The resolution called for increased cooperation in Central Asia to resolve common energy sector problems, in accordance with the outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The meeting was jointly organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It included discussions on policy reforms and creating favorable environments for sustainable energy, energy efficiency in buildings and the housing sector, and financing energy efficiency and clean energy. Thematic workshops took place on legal and regulatory frameworks for clean energy in North and Central Asia, foreign direct investment in advanced fossil fuel technology, and case studies on energy efficiency financing.
