CDM Issues One Billionth Certified Emission Reduction Credit
story highlights

The one billionth certified emission reduction (CER) was issued to CDM Project 0949, titled “Fuel switch from fossil fuel to renewable biomass for thermal energy applications in Rajasthan.” CDM projects earn one CER for each ton of carbon dioxide reduced, which means that the one billionth CER represents one billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) reduced from the atmosphere.

7 September 2012: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has issued the one billionth certified emission reduction (CER), the UNFCCC Secretariat has announced. The one billionth CER was issued to a fuel switch project in India, involving a manufacturing plant that switched its fuel source from coal and oil to locally-gathered biomass.

There are currently over 4,500 registered CDM projects in 75 developing countries worldwide. Under the CDM, projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to developing countries’ sustainable development earn one CER for each ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) reduced by the project. The one billionth CER, therefore, represents one billion tons of CO2 equivalents reduced from the atmosphere.

The one billionth CER was issued to CDM Project 0949, titled “Fuel switch from fossil fuel to renewable biomass for thermal energy applications in Rajasthan.” According to its project design document, the project reduces CO2 emissions by 17, 475 tons annually. [CDM Press Release]
