ADB5 September 2013: The fourth Workshop for Enhancing the Regional Distribution of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects in the Asia and the Pacific provided a platform to showcase national initiatives for increasing participation in the CDM.

The workshop took place from 4-5 September 2013, in Manila, the Philippines, around the theme ‘Opportunities for the CDM and Carbon Markets Post-2012.’ Organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the workshop considered how to promote better regional distribution of CDM projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

Presenters highlighted, inter alia, utilizing the CDM Programme of Activities (PoA) and standardized baselines, and also discussed how to find Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) buyers at a reasonable price.

Participants also considered issues surrounding or affecting the future of the CDM, such as its relationship with the new market mechanisms being discussed by the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP). In addition, during the session ‘Carbon Markets on the Move,’ discussions focused on harnessing the CDM, evolving carbon market and financial schemes, with participants also presenting their own national initiatives on these topics.
