The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Research Program (CCAFS) has released a study titled 'Addressing uncertainty in adaptation planning for agriculture,' which aims at helping farmers adapt to an uncertain future through pathways that are beneficial regardless of future growing conditions.
14 June 2013: The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Research Program (CCAFS) has released a study, titled ‘Addressing uncertainty in adaptation planning for agriculture,’ which aims at helping farmers adapt to an uncertain future through pathways that are beneficial regardless of future growing conditions.
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), promotes building on current capacities and using climate science to add detail and test options against scenarios. It highlights that in addition to investing in a greater understanding of climate science, it is crucial to understand the broader social processes that influence agricultural adaptation.
The study uses examples from Sri Lanka related to water storage, East Africa related to stakeholder scenario planning, and from Central America where entire livelihood production systems are expected to be altered. The approach finds that the use of predictive models is most useful for longer term planning.
