CCAFS Presents Dataset on GHG Emissions from Livestock and Sustainable Land Use

Responding to the need for information that facilitates sustainable planning for the livestock sector, the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has published a global spatial livestock dataset at high resolution for understanding the roles of livestock in biophysical, economic and social systems.

CCAFS24 December 2013: Responding to the need for information that facilitates sustainable planning for the livestock sector, the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program (CCAFS) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has published a global spatial livestock dataset at high resolution for understanding the roles of livestock in biophysical, economic and social systems.

The work, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), underscores the importance of feed efficiency as a driver of productivity, resource use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity, as well as the important role of grasslands in supplying biomass for animals. It also describes the role of mixed crop-livestock systems globally.

The dataset covers information relating to biomass use, production, feed efficiency, excretion, and GHG emission for 28 regions, eight livestock production systems, four animal species and three livestock products.
