CCAFS East African Workshop Identifies Climate and Agriculture Priorities
story highlights

The Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) East Africa Program has developed thematic research groups on, inter alia: risk mapping and opportunities for targeting appropriate crop and livestock adaptation strategies; use of climate scenarios, spatial and temporal analogues in designing adaptation strategies; quantification of GHG emissions to inform mitigation interventions; and assessment of land management strategies for crop-livestock intensification for climate change mitigation.

1 August 2012: As part of its efforts to understand regional research needs and priorities, the Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) East Africa Program has developed thematic research groups that will integrate climate risk management, adaptation and mitigation in CCAFS work across East Africa.

Over 2011, CCAFS completed: three national consultative workshops on agricultural adaptation and mitigation in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda; a regional workshop with farmers through the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF); as well as a workshop on improving climate information and food system coordination. CCAFS also held national consultative meetings with key decision makers in Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania, as well as a series of focus group discussion with NGOs and representatives of local governments.

To consolidate these national and regional efforts, CCAFS convened a workshop from 26-28 June 2012, in Arusha, Tanzania, which created thematic research groups on: risk mapping and opportunities for targeting appropriate crop and livestock adaptation strategies; use of climate scenarios, spatial and temporal analogues in designing adaptation strategies; quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to inform mitigation interventions; assessment of land management strategies for crop-livestock intensification for climate change mitigation; agriculture-climate knowledge interface for policy and action; and reducing risk and capitalizing on opportunities created by variable climate through use of improved downscaled seasonal climate forecast.

The groups will develop project concepts for potential synergies across and within CCAFS research themes. CCAFS is a program of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. [CCAFS Press Release]
