story highlights

CCAC’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership released its second annual report, which includes an overview of the Partnership's 2016 activities, as well as summaries of 2016 annual reports submitted by its partner companies.

Partner companies reported methane emissions reductions of 8,689 million tonnes.

The Partnership added two new partner companies, bringing its total membership to ten companies representing 12.5% of global oil and gas production.

27 October 2017: The second report of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) provides an overview of the organization’s 2016 activities and accomplishments, and contains summaries of company-specific annual reports submitted by OGMP’s eight 2016 members.

The publication highlights that, in 2016, members reported 8,689 million tons of methane emissions reductions, equivalent to 240,000 tons of CO2. The reductions were achieved through improvements across nine “core” sources of methane emissions, such as pumps and controls, fugitive emissions, or emissions related to venting of wells and equipment parts. The Partnership also reports that companies surveyed more than 50 participating operations across nine countries regarding their mitigation status. While surveys concentrated on production facilities, they also reviewed liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities, midstream gathering and boosting operations and gas processing plants.

Regarding technical support on quantifying and mitigating methane emissions, the publication indicates that nine technical documents underwent public review, with governments, industry and civil society providing input. On membership, the report notes that Shell and Engie E&P joined the OGMP in 2016, and BP and Engie E&P submitted their first annual reports. The ten Partner companies, BP, Engie E&P, Eni, Pemex, PTT, Repsol, Shell, Southwestern, Statoil, and Total, now comprise 12.5% of global oil and gas production.

The Climate and Clean Air Coalition, CCAC, organizes the OGMP with the purpose of assisting oil and gas companies to improve understanding as to where methane emissions occur, and how to cost-effectively address them. The OGMP consists of ten oil and gas company partners, which abide by the Partnership’s protocol for surveying operations for methane emissions, evaluating technology options to mitigate emissions sources, and producing annual reports on their progress.
