CCAC7 March 2014: The Global Connections for Women foundation (GC4W) recognized distinguished international women leaders and global women champions for their commitment to women, youth empowerment and leadership at the International Women’s Day Awards Gala. Bahijjahtu Abubakar, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) Co-Chair, was among those recognized.

The ceremony, which took place at the Harvard Club of New York City, US, celebrated women’s economic, political and social achievements while focusing attention on areas requiring further action. The awards aim to recognize, celebrate and encourage the work of exemplary women leaders.

GC4W recognized Abubakar as a Global Woman Champion. Abubakar has worked to create awareness on the climate and development benefits of reducing short-lived climate pollutants, including economic, environment and health benefits.

Abubakar’s fellow CCAC co-leaders described her as a committed, innovative leader with “an abundance of ideas on how to forward women’s issues” who pioneered work on clean cookstoves, energy efficiency and reductions in black carbon. They also highlighted her role in advocating for energy alternatives and ensuring delivery of CCAC’s work on the ground.

The CCAC is a partnership among governments, intergovernmental organizations, the private sector, civil society and other stakeholders. GC4W was created in response to the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to support women and youth in underserved communities around the world. [CCAC Press Release] [GC4 Press Release]
