CCAC17 July 2014: A meeting of the Working Group of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) shared updates on partner initiatives and discussed preparations for key climate meetings in September 2014. The working group also agreed to a new initiative concept on addressing short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in cities.

The Working Group meeting, which took place from 16-17 July 2014, in Paris, France, was attended by over 90 representatives of CCAC state and non-state partners, observers, and its Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) and Secretariat. The meeting provided a forum for sharing of updates on partner activities, preparation for upcoming meetings, and consideration of new initiatives, among other issues.

Presentations by CCAC partners covered, inter alia: findings of a report on the cost of health impacts of road transport; the role of non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases (GHGs) in achieving the 2°C target; the role of private sector engagement; and national actions and financial contributions by partner governments, and cooperation amongst CCAC partners.

On preparations for upcoming meetings, it was noted that the UN Secretary’s Climate Summit in September 2014 will include multilateral and multi-stakeholder action announcements in the area of SLCPs. Presentations were also given on potential CCAC initiatives to be showcased at the summit, including: the Green Freight Programme; the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership; and the Municipal Solid Waste Initiative.

On new activities, an initiative focusing on realizing health benefits from addressing SLCPs in cities was approved as a concept, to be further considered by the Working Group in September 2014. An initiative on the governance and process for CCAC, aimed at simplifying procedures for funding and revision of proposals, was approved with agreement to address minor issues at a later stage.

Discussions were also held on: the CCAC’s vision for moving forward; strategies for engaging partners and increasing capacities; and preparations for the CCAC High-level Assembly in September 2014. The Working Group also considered the work and plans of the SAP, and approved two new partner organizations.

The CCAC, hosted by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), is a voluntary international coalition of partners focusing on addressing SLCPs in order to protect the environment and public health, promote food and energy security, and address near-term climate change. The CCAC’s 93 partners include governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The CCAC’s cooperative activities are overseen by its Working Group, which meets at least twice a year. [CCAC Website] [IISD RS Coverage of the CCAC Working Group Meeting]
